I’m always looking for new things that I can offer in a workshop, and ideas for using every bit of the salvage wool that we “up-cycle” from Pendleton Woolen Mills when we clean up and spin into center pull skeins. One of my dear friends gave me an idea – it’s not a new idea but not one that I have previously associated with Fuzzie Wuzzie. Since the wool that we use has already been spun it gives a much different look than the felted wool projects that most of us know about.

I was recently traveling for business and brought a tub of wool and a bar of soap and made the most wonderful felted soap. It’s like having a soft wash cloth wrapped around the bar of soap. Using felted soap cleans & exfoliates your skin all in one step, leaving your skin silky smooth with use.

Felted wool is a process of first wrapping a bar of soap in wool fibers, soaking the wool fibers in water and creating agitation until the wool “felts” or the matting of wool fibers caused by a combination of heat, moisture, and agitation which cause the scales of the fibers to open up and lock together. Felting condenses the fibers which causes the wool fibers shrink.

I will be adding finished soap and other items with the felting as well as making small bags of various colors of wool available to do your own projects. This felted soap makes a really nice project for a workshop, or a child’s birthday party. Felted soap is extremely simple to create and so fun to work with – kids LOVE our Felted Soap Workshops.
